Diablo Immortal

Diablo Immortal is a fun game that retains that special something

Diablo Immortal takes place between the events of Diablo II: Lord of Destruction (an expansion for Diablo II) and Diablo III. The massively multiplayer element aside, it appears to look and play a lot like a traditional Diablo game, just on mobile. That won’t appease everyone (especially diehard PC gamers) but it might not be as bad as the critics initially suspected.

While Diablo had a fairly smooth transition from PC to console with Diablo 3, some sacrifices still had to be made, and the lower precision of the thumb pads meant players had fewer ways to customize the game to their liking. Still, it worked well, and I’ve spent years happily playing Diablo 3 on my Xbox. However, touchscreen controls are a completely different challenge. Luckily, Blizzard has done a pretty good job making it easy to move around the isometric map with a virtual thumbstick on the left side and mash skills on the right.

From what I saw and played, Diablo Immortal is a fun, quality Diablo game that retains that special something that makes the franchise so special. You don’t have to play it, but whining online makes you sound like a literal infant.

Blizzard had announced that they will soon be opening the game for a limited public technical alpha. The goal of the controlled launch is to test server stability and client performance across a wide range of devices as well as collect player feedback regarding the core game, the leveling experience and other early gameplay systems.

The developer has also revealed that Diablo Immortal will be free-to-play when it officially launches. It noted that the entire game – including the full story, playable classes, gameplay time and post-lunch content – will be free, stating that “optional in-game purchases will never stand in the way of progression or enjoying the game”.

“We plan on supporting Diablo Immortal with a constant cadence of free content, including new gear, features, classes, stories and areas to explore,” it continued. “We also want to make sure every purchase feels fair and is guided by a clear set of values that place an emphasis on the player experience for all players.”

Blizzard also debuted a two-tier Battle Pass system that will be a bit more generous to subscribers than those on the free tier, but again it’s hard to tell how much that will impact the world until it’s fully populated.

While it’s clear that as players progress in the game it will be harder to grind out success without spending a bit of cash, most gamers probably won’t need to spend a dime as they hack and slack their way through Sanctuary on their phone. It may not be quite as rewarding as those who cough up a few bucks a month on a Battle Pass subscription, or spend some dollars on Platinum (one of the three in-game currencies) to augment their loot progression, but Blizzard seems to have found a nice balance between accessibility and depth.
